Translated word for word from the Italian newspaper LA REPUBBLICA:

PESARO - A man stops at a motorway service area. Fills her up. And starts again. But without his wife, forgotten there for six hours.

It happened yesterday afternoon at the Foglia Est service area, near Pesaro. The forgetful protagonist is a young Macedonian who lives in Germany with his wife, who is originally from Georgia.

The couple, returning to Germany, had taken the ferry from Greece to Pesaro. After taking the A14 motorway, the young family - father, mother and a little daughter - stopped at the service area. While the woman made for the ladies' room, the man (with his daughter on board) filled up with petrol. And drove off, without noticing his wife's absence.

Desperate, with no money or papers, the woman begged the manager's help. A police patrol was called; they comforted her and took her to the local police direction. From there they tried to track down the husband, whose portable phone, however, was off. It took six hours before the man finally answered and came back to rescue his wife.

Theman explained his "absent-mindedness" by saying that he did not notice her absence because she usually travels behind with the little girl. Finally, the couple started again their journey to Germany together.

Such episodes happen frequently on Italy's main roads. Oddly enough, the most frequent "forgetters" are not Italians, but Swiss or Germans.
