I hope I don't sound offensive if I say that this thread has been to some extent hijacked by a bunch of Poles with a very strong feeling for the tragedies of their own country. I am not saying that is wrong, but I started it from the point of view of someone who belongs to Italy and Britain, countries which, 1, never were under Communism at all, and, 2, had a powerful social-revolutionary group of working-class movements long before 1917; and it had to do with the effects, not just or mainly of Communism, but of all social revolution movements from political Trades Unionism to Anarchism. What the effect of the Polish Communist party on Poland was is only a part of the picture.
