It is perhaps worth pointing out that Google, who are fighting the Government of the United States for their right to direct an unreported and unchecked amount of traffic to bestiality, snuff and incest sites, have accepted the demands of the People's Republic of China to let them censor the political content of their traffic without a complaint. And the moral of the story is: porn is good enough for Westerners, but freedom is too good for Chinamen. To anyone who thought that the founders of Google were anything more than the usual run of sleazy, cowardly, porn-peddling, illiberal media magnates in the Robber Murder and Bill TeardowntheGates mold, welcome to planet Earth.

I guess their conscience is in the same place as their wallet. It's awful.

I always thought that sort of thing was uncensored because of the vastness of the internet. I didn't realize you even could really sensor it. It is sad that free speech pretty much only protects our more degenerate interests now, instead of what was intended. And it is sad that the powers that be of Google don't stand up for free speech when it will not make them money.

while i'm sure the opposition to the US initiative is being couched in terms of freedom of expression, anti-censorship what not. i would say that mostly the cause is maintaining market share.

but mostly my gut says look at the deference’s between the two countries. in the US not only dose Google feel they can get away with it (or at lest that they could with the proper PR gain any number of allies) but it's the sort of thing that would play well to there costumers. speaking truth to power, standing up for the free flow of information (with the subtext that this is what the company is all about...not the generation of profit).

in chine well it's a deferent sort of thing. there dealing with a truly fascist government (whet ever your views on the US government, it doesn’t change the facts about china’s government). the powers that be will have absolutely no regard for any high flown statement’s or attempts to "play" the situation. at the end of the day if they don't play along china may just decide to confiscate any assists in country and declare there hole enterprise illegal (which brings it back to market share and profit)
