Can you do no better? - continued

But what you really should have avoided is the moral equivalency argument, also known as tu quoque (in French, toi aussi). "...if you go to a heterosexual club, it's about as sordid. And it's not like heterosexuals don't read/watch porn." This is a disastrous argument for two reasons. First, it concedes the opponent's essential thrust: that bathroom-type promiscuity is bad and squalid, and that it is typical of the gay lifestyle. All you can find to say is that, well, straight people do it too. And that is the second point: that it is inherently weak. It amounts to looking to points in the "opposition" where the "opposition" is most like the accused party. Lee's point, however, is that this is typical of all the gay lifestyle: and that what should be seen in opposition to it should be the whole straight lifestyle - all the happily or unhappily married people, all the single people who live as celibates by choice or otherwise, all their main concerns in life. Are you seriously willing to say that pornography, ugly quick encounters, sex for its own sake, are as typical of the whole straight world, as Lee claims them to be of the gay world? If not, don't even bring in the argument; because by merely doing so, you concede defeat.

I can offer a better argument myself, namely that a lot of homosexuals dislike and avoid "the scene", and do so, exactly, because they heartily dislike its meat market aspect. I have myself had a gay friend tell me of his dismay at finding that a pub he used to frequent had gone gay, and the irritating feeling of being looked at and measured by everyone present; and another homosexual I knew refused the very designation of gay, because he could not stand the package that came with it - and if you want to know what package, just have a look at the so-called Love Festival in Berlin. In other words, I doubt whether Mr.Lee's experience is quite as typical as he feels it is.

If you had not added that childish closing rapsberry, I would not have been quite so ruthless with what you presumed to present as a reasoned response. But if you add bad manners to intellectual incompetence, then I'm afraid you will have to take your lumps.
