What a tragedy
Jun. 26th, 2006 05:53 pmI sincerely apologize to all my Australian friends. Australia did not deserve to go out like that, for a penalty that was not there. I still think Italy might have managed to score in extra time, but Australia fought honourably and well, and this result is a mockery. Truly heartbreaking.
The only thing that makes me feel better is the thought of the hearty meal of own words that the loathsome commentary team from Britain's ITV channel must have made. They were so bad, their understanding of the game so poor, and their bias against Italy so evident, that I watched most of the game with the sound turned off.
At least this time we cannot say, as in Korea/Japan four years ago, that the refs were against us. As far as I could see, the ref distributed his mistakes impartially. It is just sad that the most disastrous one should come at the last minute.
Better luck next time, Australia. And congratulations on a Cup well fought.
