Hello fpb, I wanted to thank you here for those two threads about Snape that you posted for me on superversive's page. I didn't want to reply to you there because I had just posted a giant reply to you on superversive's page earlier, and I thought two in one night would be too much.

So I thought I'd move it here...

I truly think that the only "right" option for J.K. Rowling is to make Snape ultimately a good guy, but I've seen a number of people argue to the contrary, and I'm sure J.K.Rowling doesn't want to be second guessed. It seems to me that in killing Dumbledore, Snape saves Malfoy from having to do it--saves him from committing a terrible crime and thereby gives him a chance to make a change in his life. Similarly, near the very end, Snape keeps Harry from using an unforgiveable curse--again, saving Harry from a terrible mistake. Those facts, combined with the sympathy Harry found himself developing for the Half-Blood Prince as he used his potions textbook, lead me to believe that Snape is intended to be good in the end. In addition, if Snape *is* simply evil, then Dumbledore was very very foolish--and his message about the power of love seems less reliable. If no one goes from being bad to being good--if bad guys are always bad guys and good guys are always good guys--then it's not as interesting a world as it might be.

I'm sure those thoughts have all been posted more eloquently on Mugglenet--I went there a lot right after Half Blood Prince came out, but haven't visited recently.
