A thought that has been growing stronger and stronger in my mind as I watched this excellent World Cup is that it is becoming too hard to score. I have watched several excellent teams play beautifully, attack and defence, only to go whole matches without a goal abd having to play extra time or even penalties, because defenders have become too skilful. Even the best players have trouble even coming close to goal. I also have the impression that a lot of the goals that have been scored have come from surprise strikes from outside the box, before the defender could nullify the attack. I wonder whether there is a case for making a change to make life easier for attackers, in particular widening the goal a bit.

I believe a real hoot would be to fashion the players' jerseys out of a fabric of fibre optics so that during play a computer could, at random of course, change players from one team to another. You could possibly have an Italian player about to score a goal on the Germans, and them WHAMO! He's suddenly playing for Germany! Conversely, a German defender right on his heels may be switched to Italian colours and get a clean shot at the goal!

Oh, but the riots that would ensue...

Phooey.

Nevermind.

Bet you do not dare suggest that one for American football. Or, even more amusingly, baseball. (What if third baseman suddenly found himself turned into a runner? Or vice versa?)

Some time ago I proposed exploding ball, which would go a-boom at 237th kick - the guys would learn their counting! Refuse to kick would be punishable by - I don't really know - a couple of prods with an electric baton perhaps?
The charge would be relatively light, somethin more to deprave the guy of his leg-hair than deprave him of his leg, but not too weak. And of course there will be next booms! at 416th, 512th etc.
