The Lib Dems in denial
May. 7th, 2011 06:42 pmAfter the long-expected and well-deserved bleeding of the last couple of days, the Lib Dems have gone into groupthink mode. They all - even their supposed thinking head, Vince Cable - repeat the same notion: the public punished them for being too close to the Tories. So now they are going to make trouble in the Government every time they dare, to show that they are not Tories.
Bullshit. There is not one living man living in Britain right now who does not know that the doom of the Lib Dems was consumed when they were found to have lied in cold blood on the most fundamental features of their program to their core electorate: lied in the full knowledge that they were going to lie, and passionately argued in public positions (especially with respect to university funding) they knew they were going to reverse. It is the lie that their core electorate, in which college students feature largely, cannot forgive, and if they now start some psychodrama of rediscovering their left identity while trapped within a right government, they are only going to strengthen their reputation for mendacity and disloyalty.
