I have been waiting a while to make this fiftieth entry. Although it is not actually the fiftieth "You couldn't make it up dept." entry, it still is something of a solemn-sounding number, and I wanted something special for it: something that was either so crazy, or so unimaginable, or so absurd, or so hilarious, as to impose itself.
The Times of India supplied it. I think a lot of us have heard the expression "he was like a dog with two tails about it," meaning, he was very proud of the whole matter and itched to show it off. And I think that a good few of us understood that "two tails" was a polite way to suggest a different appendage.
Well, it turns out that, whatever dogs may feel about having more than their fair share, the only known human with a complete double set finds it an embarrassment. A 24-year-old Indian businessman has entered a hospital in Uttar Pradesh for the stated purpose of having one of his two fully functioning penises surgically removed; or else he will not be able to marry.
According to doctors, there are about 100 known cases around the world of men with a second penis, but this man is the only case ever recorded in which the second organ is fully functional. In every other known case it is vestigial. And now doctors find themselves with a serious problem. Since the penis is served by a dense network of blood vessels - and it is a rush of blood that allows it to become erect - if they perform the operation wrong, and do not manage to reconnect all the blood vessels properly, the poor man might go from having two functional organs to one permanently floppy one. I sincerely wish him good luck.
