Oh, BTW, Three Oranges was replying to a response by someone else - deleted I don't know why, and it was years ago anyway - which argued that the character of Don Ottavio had a place in eighteenth-century performance practice.
It may also interest you to know that this essay was originally written for the late Sir Ernst Gombrich, the great culture historian, shortly before he passed away, and that as I recall he appreciated it.
