The comparison with pornography is also exact in that it gets no respect nationally or internationally. It is a minority in one country. With some minority pursuits, you find that they actually have more resonance in the wider world than at home: the way that, in the past, jazzmen and bluesmen who could not get a hotel room in America would find themselves respected celebrities in France or Britain or Germany or Italy. More recently, the same thing used to happen to comic-book artists. With evangelical media, the opposite is the case. I would have to write a paragraph to explain to anyone outside America (or, apparently, Australia) who Chuck Colson or James Dobson are.
