As a matter of fact, the 1960s invented nothing except the Pill. The ideological foundations for the Sexual Revolution had been laid since at least 1700 or so, and Free Love had a considerable vogue among American intellectuals in the early eighteen hundreds. What changed was that popular culture became uncritically possessed of what had until then been mostly a matter for fringe views and shock horror stories in newspapers; and the Pill had more than a little to do with it - though of course it was not the whole story.
