Ignorance is a problem throughout Latin America. A few years ago, I saw a statistic that made my hair stand on end. It showed that in all other continents, the proportion of priests against baptized Catholics varied narrowly from 2000 to 2200 per priest. In the supposed Catholic heartland of Latin America the proportion was 7800 per priest. Clearly the people are underserved and undercatechized; no wonder that evangelical ministers from North America make such headway.
