I am sort of brooding on a story set among the Norse Gods - not the Marvel version, but the Eddic originals (or rather my understanding of them). This is one of the few stories I have thought of recently that did not begin with JKR's mythology, which is rather remarkable. But I doubt whether I will ever complete it.

Go for it! *roots* If I'm not writing, at least other people should be doing it, especially if they have good ideas.

Why won't you finish it?

Do it, do it!

Er, I hardly said I had started it.

Start it! And then finish it.

exessive self-recs

Your owl box was full or whatever. Here's what I wanted to say to you:

"Hey, it's one thing to self-rec your fics to someone who seems to be perfectly describing your style. It's a completely different and in my opinion entirely pathetic thing to self-rec your fics to a dozen different threads. Don't you think that if people like your stuff, they'll rec it themselves? I wonder how many others saw your string of self-recs and vowed to never read anything you touched.

"Response not necessary."

What is this about? Manners? It certainly cannot be imagined that anyone willing to publish such an ugly little display of spite would be concerned with manners. What, then, are you complaining of? That I have a little confidence in my work? That I think I have done a decent enough job of writing that others might enjoy some of it? Should I, in your view, only have published stuff I was ashamed of? Or does it bother you that I haver written enough to be able to recommend a few different ones to people looking for different things? You sound foolish and hung up; and "very well O'Neill, I will call you a benighted fool." (Now don't you wish you had used a different icon?)

In this LJ, this sort of screed is usually deleted and banned. However, I will leave yours up as a case study.

I never said anything about publishing stories, only about posting recs. In my view you should recommend your fics with a lower frequency. Most people who read the Help! forum read many threads, so if you rec your fics to two or three threads at a time the majority of viewers will check out your author page and read anything that suits.

I don't object to self-recs, but when you self-rec to so many threads at once, I think you draw many fewer potential readers and much more negative attention. It puts out a message, to me at least, that you'll rec to as many threads as you can find that even slightly match your fics simply because you desire that next review so badly. To me, that's not a positive message at all. As you put it, a dozen self-recs in a row puts out a message that you have little confidence in your work.

You make it sound as if I had done something shameful, instead of spending a few minutes finding a few threads out of a couple of hundred that I could answer. The fact that I recced other people's fics as well as my own (I might have done more but for the accident that one of my favourite writers, Chthonia, had already happened on one thread) and hat I used more glowing terms for - Hijja, A Literate Engineer, Saiph, Paracelsus, Kikei, Kayla Rudbek, etc. - than for mine, evidently goes for nothing. And you sound as if this was something I did every day of the week, rather than one poke around FA Park after weeks of absence. I suggest you moderate your exaggerated sensitivities.

Well, if you want to read fictional writing by me, there is plenty of choice already.

This one is Classical Greek (except for an intrusion by my own characters, who are meant to follow on from Greek mythology): http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2041734/1/Orpheus
