Totally incredible. I already knew that Rumsfeld was a disastrous Defence Secretary and ought to have been replaced even before the war started; but what this says to me is that in the end everything that went wrong about the war and aftermath was in essence a reflex of President Bush II's excessive, pathological optimism and mental laziness. The disinvstment in Iraqi occupying forces at the same time as the country was de-Baathized - which left the US forces as the sole authority on the ground - reminds me of nothing so much as Hitler's disastrous withdrawal of forty divisions from the Russian front just before Zhukov struck back around Moscow in the winter of 1941: it is wilfully insisting that all problems are solved merely because it flatters you to believe they are.
