BTW, the thing Value-Added Tax is that everyone knows that it is there. All citizens of every European state are aware of it, so that, in general, there is no more sense adding it at the end of a bill than there would be in, for instance, adding all the taxes paid on highly taxed items such as liquor, petrol (gas), or tobacco. It is often added at the till rather than in the cover price in the case of big-ticket items such as computers and cars, and in airport shops because travellers from outside Europe can then claim it back. However, I used to actually find the practice of pricing computers without VAT unfair, because I wanted to know how much I would be paying at the end, and, like I said, of course I knew I would be paying VAT.
