Meme!

Stump the writer, swunked from [personal profile] kennahijja.

[1] Go to my list of fics and pick out a line or three from one of my stories.
[2] I will respond with which story of mine I think it's from. I SWEAR I WON'T CHEAT.
[3] A drabble of choice for the first three of you that manage to stump me.

Is it from Bodies and Souls?

[identity profile] fpb.livejournal.com 2008-09-10 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, and do you think it is "cheating" to just look at the titles of my fics?

[identity profile] mentalguy.livejournal.com 2008-09-10 04:52 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, that's right.

[identity profile] mentalguy.livejournal.com 2008-09-10 05:08 am (UTC)(link)
I shouldn't think so. Unless you've an unusually good memory, not being allowed to look at titles seems like an unfair disadvantage for a prolific author.

It would be nice if the rules were a bit clearer generally. For example, I assume I'm only given one go at this?

[identity profile] mentalguy.livejournal.com 2008-09-10 05:27 am (UTC)(link)
I realized that I am assuming that you had identified the fic, but didn't remember the exact title and needed to consult the title list for that reason.

If you had to resort to looking at titles before remembering the fic at all, then that shouldn't count.

Correct.

All the time, Harry was wondering how much danger he was really in. Plain speaking to a potential mortal enemy was not without risk, either

[identity profile] fpb.livejournal.com 2008-09-12 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
Harry Potter and the Ice Princess, of course.

P.S.: are you having a sleepless night, or are you in Australia somewhere?

Meh. Knew it wouldn't work :(.

Nah, still in Scotland and subscribing to the 'sleep is for wusses' theory ;).

[identity profile] fpb.livejournal.com 2008-09-13 05:27 am (UTC)(link)
A hint: the guy who came closest to stumping me is [personal profile] mentalguy, because he picked a fic I barely ever think of. (I wrote it for a challenge.) I had to review a list of all my titles before I remembered it.

I caught this myself because I had woken up in the middle of the night and could not go back to sleep. I have been having some disturbed sleep patterns of late.

I realised I'm pretty good at this, apart from quotes that come from sex scenes. Those stumped me to no end over on IJ :(.

Hm... going through life in a state of over-tiredness certainly takes care of the sleeplessness issue, but I'd not recommend it.

[identity profile] fpb.livejournal.com 2008-09-13 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Neither would I. I have been completely shattered for two weeks now, and look forward to sleeping in all day tomorrow.

(Except, perhaps, for writing one or two essays that have been milling around my head for a while.)

[identity profile] fpb.livejournal.com 2008-10-06 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Come to think of it, I can't see why anyone should not have as many goes as they like.

[identity profile] mentalguy.livejournal.com 2008-10-07 05:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Very well then. I'll try to exercise moderation. :)

Here's another:

"Mine has poisoned itself after chewing some plastic sheeting, and I need to check some references."

[identity profile] fpb.livejournal.com 2008-10-07 05:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, that's a favourite. It's the humorous conclusion of the otherwise grim THE HAMMERING.

[identity profile] mentalguy.livejournal.com 2008-10-07 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes.

I thought THE HAMMERING was brilliant, by the way -- very well thought-out and chilling. (If it had one flaw I think it was that your own voice overcame Hermione's for portions of it, but it didn't ruin the effect.)

I'll make my next one harder...

[identity profile] mentalguy.livejournal.com 2008-10-08 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
Two (consecutive) sentences worth of dialogue.

"What happened?"

"Part of it we only found out later."

[identity profile] fpb.livejournal.com 2008-10-08 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
That did stump me for a moment. It is the Rabbi telling Rachel about the battle between the Golem and the SS in THE FIRST FEMALE LIBRARIAN.

[identity profile] fpb.livejournal.com 2008-10-08 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you. I would love some reviews. Are you reading them from FA or from ff.net?

[identity profile] fpb.livejournal.com 2008-10-08 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
And I agree that Hermione ended up sounding like me - although she does talk like a book in skirts, still a girl of fifteen or so does not quite sound so politically aware. I tried to diminish that by showing that for most of her letter she was quoting, but all the bits about understanding history were her own - that is, mine own. I could not find a way around the problem. You are, however, the first person to bring up this issue.

[identity profile] mentalguy.livejournal.com 2008-10-08 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
Yes. I suppose in this case the phrasing of the second sentence is likely to have helped place it.

I'll see if I can find something more generic...

[identity profile] mentalguy.livejournal.com 2008-10-08 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
Incidentally, I loved the way that wonder-working Rabbis were integrated into the HP continuity in that story.

[identity profile] mentalguy.livejournal.com 2008-10-08 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
I can certainly oblige, as time permits. I've been reading them on both sites, but I have a (barely-used) account on ff.net; I suppose I should dust it off.

[identity profile] mentalguy.livejournal.com 2008-10-12 07:35 am (UTC)(link)
All right, here's one more. It is a bit brutal, but you've proven yourself exceptionally good at this.

"Out of what?"

[identity profile] fpb.livejournal.com 2008-10-12 07:51 am (UTC)(link)
This time I'm stumped. Name your drabble.

[identity profile] mentalguy.livejournal.com 2008-10-12 08:36 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, okay. It was from "The Unexpected Kiss".

For my drabble, I would like to see Odysseus about to set out on his journey with the oar after the events of the Odyssey.
