The Potterverse is certainly convenient scaffolding -- I am mainly suggesting kicking it away sooner rather than later.
As far as publishing on LJ, you might also want to develop the habit of using a specific tag for your Attanasio clan posts, so you can find and manage those entries easily later should the need arise. In retrospect, I have had plenty of cause to regret not having distinctly tagged entries related major projects.
The one other thought I have at the moment is not to worry about treating these fics/ficlets as chapters in an epic yet. It's too early in the process for that, and you're still finding your voice for the stories (in some respects I think King of the Cats seems to have worked best in that regard so far). I think maybe you would do better to write small fics at a variety of points in history, from different perspectives, and see what sticks later on.
Also, ultimately, I can't really say whether this is a prudent use of your time, only that it's definitely an idea that has gotten hold of you and which I think you will have some difficulty divesting yourself of if you don't pursue it in some way.
(I have more to say, I think, but that will have to wait for another time as tonight I am overtired and am forming coherent sentences only with considerable effort.)
