...I have lived on the streets of London and dined at the high table of Balliol College. I have seen a lot of people and things, sad and glad, good and bad. But one thing I had not experienced yet is to find a person who is so indoctrinated in the mercenary lies spread by ignorant and self-interested politicians and propagandists that she will defend an indefensible system that is not only daily ripping her off but threatening her well-being, her livelihood and her self-respect; that she will stand up for it proudly, angrily, as though she were defending some principle, when what she is defending is inhuman exploitation and abuse, a system that is pretty nearly torturing her to death. A victim defending her rapist, a slave standing up for Simon Legree, a lamb speaking up for her butcher - that I had not seen yet, and it is a dreadful sight.
