Costumed girls at cons

There's a bitingly accurate treatment of this in Bimbos of the Death Sun (http://www.fictionwise.com/ebooks/b7827/?si=0). (Which is actually a pretty fun book -- don't let the title or the cover fool you, it's basically a murder mystery set at a con, with all sorts of in-jokes and references for sci-fi fans, especially con-goers.)

Personal anecdote for [livejournal.com profile] fpb: I once attended a con where Chris Claremont was one of the featured guests, and a friend of mine dressed as Illyana (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magik_%28comics%29) for the costume contest. She was a bit skeeved when Claremont followed her around afterwards.
