Forgot to add this--there's a book you might find really interesting, called Enterprising Women by Camille Bacon-Smith. It's by a sociologist who got into fandom and studied the whole culture from the inside. I don't know if it's still in print, but you could probably find it on Amazon. I have a copy but that's one of my keepers.;)
