Reflections of a stormy petrel

Actually, the Amazons of Greek mythology have been alternately placed in eastern Europe, Asia Minor or northern Africa. Wonder Woman is from the fictional island of Themyscira, which is a vaguely Hellenistic society. But her original costume was comprised almost entirely of American iconography, and her first appearance was fighting Nazis. Regardless of whether or not she technically is American, or whether or not her creator actually espoused what anyone would want to call American values, the character has been marketed as an All-American girl. And apparently still is, which is really what makes the article ridiculous.
