Not that I care, except that it's important to convict the monstrous Charles Taylor; but is there a single person in the world who believes Naomi Campbell rather than Mia Farrow?

Campbell is playing dumb about the diamonds because she doesn't want people to think she would've had anything to do with the scruffy little unglamorous war criminal Taylor. She also doesn't want to come off as a shallow money-grubber getting all "a-twitter" over getting free diamonds... or being "disappointed" that they weren't yet bright and sparkly and ring-ready. She's not anything about the horror of the wars in Africa. She's just defending her image. Blood diamonds are bad business, especially for the public face of fashion.

Worse, according to her former assistant, she and Taylor were flirting all through the dinner.

That's what I mean by she didn't want to people to think she would have anything to do with him. She's denying they did anything other than talk a little over dinner. What would people say if she verified she and Taylor were whispering sweet nothings and making goo-goo eyes all night? Sweet Naomi working a dictator who has access to billions in diamonds in order to get, well, diamonds? How shocking! She can't have that. So... deny, deny, deny. And if that ultimately fails, she'll plead ignorance or fear and hope to get a pass.

Everything done by us will eventually return to us, either to our credit or our shame. It's how it goes.

There were two unpleasant persons (at least) at that dinner. One was a brutal, violent-tempered thug with a long record of violence against friends, neighbours and employees and a self-indulgent habit of thinking that rich and powerful people could stomp on anyone around them and not suffer any consequences. The other was Charles Taylor.

She's the enfant terrible of the modeling industry, for sure, and is particularly known for rude and aggressive behavior towards people who work for her/ "inferiors".
