We're doing Richard II in Uni at the moment. A massive theme there is a kind of perversion of nature that comes with Bolingbrokes usurpation of the throne. Same with Macbeths murder of Duncan. I would tend to blame this view of political sovereignty on the Reformers, but the Middle-Ages did have a view of kings as men given Divine authority - but of course the Church was a mitigating factor.
