Italian history after the Byzantine reconquest is, I admit, a bad weak spot of mine...and I only know as much as I do about the period between "the fall of Rome" and Narses' final victory because after reading Lest Darkness Fall, I managed to lay my hands on the Loeb Classical Library's translations of the relevant parts of Procopius.

About the only stuff I know much about in that field would be Venice, because my local library happens to have a copy of John Julius Norwich's history of the Serenissima.
