The BJP's crushing victory in India is the worst news I heard since I don't even remember when. Long term and in a global perspective, it is even worse than the spread of jihad in central Africa. It means that the world's largest democracy is now in the hands of a party whose ideology is effectively Fascist and of a leader whose political career has been built on the blood of hundreds of Indian Muslims. Nothing I know of the BJP disposes me to look at them with anything but horror, and I feel sure that the morons who applaud their victory because they are "pro-business" will find reason to regret their cheerful idiocy.

Perhaps I am missing something, but why exactly is this bad for the West? It sounds to me that, under the BJP, India is more likely to become an effective counterweight to the jihadists. Before this my greatest fear regarding India was that they would keep caving in to Pakistani terrorism and threats until India lost her strategic advantage over that failed state.

Did you miss the bit about the BJP being a bunch of Fascists? Who do you think has been murderously persecuting Christians across the sub-continent? Who do you think is trying to rewrite history to suit its nationalistic resentment, and trying to pollute India's impressive university sector in the pursuit of that? Who do you think has been breeding communitarian strife? Alliance with Fascists is always stupid in the long run, because they are all about resentment and hatred of the foreigner. Believe me, I know. And consider this: now we are in a situation in which each of the three great Asian powers, India, China and Japan, is in the most violently nationalistic mood they have ever been in, each eager to settle accounts and swing their virilities around. Look at what is happening in the South China Sea, and look at Japanese promotion of the Yakusuni (if I spelled that right) Shrine. Now add a new, furiously nationalistic Indian government to the mess. Like what you see? I don't.

I am not as up on all the interior players, but I'm with you. The vibes coming out of the region for some years now have been worrisome. They've been gearing up, it seems, to start trying to settle some very old scores, and that can't be good for anyone. The next US and European leaders certainly look, whoever they will be, are going to have their hands full, all over.
