...or do JKR's amusing descriptions of the very silly girls at Hogwarts, and especially Romilda Vane with her obsession with love potions to force people into inappropriate relationships, suggest a JKR commentary on fangirls and ship obsessions?

I dunno, I saw Remus' 'stfu hor' comment at the end as being STOP SHIPPING AT INAPPROPRIATE TIMES, FOOHS.

I do so pity foohs.

Romilda Vane is such a wonderfully fictional name, though: the given name so MS in its extravagance and femininity, while the surname echoes the exact facet of her personality that shows up most.

Or it could just be a comment on how silly teenage girls can be? I mean, I've been to high school, and I've certainly known girls like that. Don't know if they'd go so far as to feed people love potions, but... They tend to grow out of it - I can't remember how old Romilda Vane was supposed to be, but she can't be more than 14 or so. Then you get the slightly older girly silliness, as we might see in Lavender Brown - and I've known people as old as 20 who would try to carry on these completely inappropriate relationships, where they obviously have nothing in common but still try to make it work - because breaking up is messy business no matter what the relationship's like.
