I was tempted to archive this under my "you couldn't make it up" heading, but it is not funny, it is tragic. It shows the brute, outrageous, unfathomable ignorance of anything that is meant by being Catholic that seems the norm these days - even of things that the very enemies of the Church once instinctively knew and understood. The MSN news service ran a story about the young Belgian nun who disgraced herself by indecorous and sexually suggestive dancing with a missionary (drooling photos included). And it ran a poll: was it right for her Superior to discipline her? And at the time I cast my vote, an unimaginable 77% of readers had voted that no, it was not right. Great God in Heaven, what planet do these people live on? Do they have any idea at all what a nun is? Or are they all just so hag-ridden with sexual "freedom" as a positive value, that anything that interferes with it in any way just seems to them instinctively wrong and immoral?

I don't find the 77% that surprising at all. If the majority of voters are American then the concept of religious life isn't something they get to begin with. We're also talking about groups that think homosexual couples should not be allowed to marry but at the same time heterosexuals should be allowed to marry as many times as they choose --- its like a religious license to sleep with someone of the opposite sex and then move on to the next when you get bored. Its a bizarre "Christianized" rationalization in this country (and others).

This was a nun? That's ridiculous! If she wanted to dance provocatively etc., why'd she become a nun in the first place?

That is exactly right, even though you mean it for sarcasm. Read a few monastic rules - not only Christian, Buddhist too might be to the point. And do not speak of that of which you know nothing.
