I will soon post about some nonsense raised in someone else's LJ. Meanwhile...

...I am sorry, but I have to conclude that when someone cannot see the difference between ship "wanks", to use the elegant language of modern fandoms, and a serious, even if angry, debate about Classical culture between people who know something about it, I'm afraid that it's time to defriend.

Especially given the extraordinary amount of self-importance that comes across in the response. Sorry, but I do not feel enormously privileged just to have been admitted to your court. You've got your rules and I've got mine, but nobody died and made you Emperess.

Sounds like a gasbag. Dump 'em.

Well, no, this person had her points (that is why I friended her in the first place), but I guess this was one of my more inevitable break-ups - there always was a certain amount of unshared territory and unspoken compromise. I spent months before I friended her wondering whether I should, and months after trying to alter my comments to suit her. That is a recipe for disaster.

Ah, yeah, that's different.

I tend to lurk when I find someone intresting but I detect their dislike or scorn. i just never comment.

The thing is though, that keeping it as a debate is one thing and name calling is an entirely different thing. Once any rudeness started to surface you both should have continued it somewhere other than on that journal. I would, in your or the other persons place, just said "let's continue this on my LJ" which would have been the polite thing to do instead of both making yourselves a laughing stock in a post which was ridiculing the very thing you were doing.

I would have done that if I had been given the time, as I did on at least another occasion. The point however is that there is a difference between arguing about shipping wars in HP fandom and arguing about the meaning of passages in Plato and Homer. If all that matters to you is that things should pass themselves off orderly and neat in your LJ, you have different priorities than I. And if your response contains too many first person singular pronouns and too much suggestion that the worst thing I had done was to upset an imperial ego, then I fail to even feel much sympathy with said priorities.
