I haven't posted in a while. Why? Because all the posts I see coming in the near future are astonishingly unpleasant, and some may cost me friends.

For instance, the several conservative friends I have been acquiring may have a problem with my view of current politics and the criticism I feel coming of America and Americans - not liberals, that's shooting fish in a barrel, but conservatives. I have to post about the Catholic teaching about homosexuality, which I really dread. I cannot post about my country without a remark about its politics, which are humiliatingly bad. The only consolation being that Britain is even worse. The Blair government has hit rock bottom, its basic and ruinous emptiness is there for everyone to see, it has managed to worsen everything in Britain that it meant to improve, and yet there is no visible alternative. There are a couple of historical posts which would probably hurt or annoy two of the finest people on my f-list; and as if that wasn't enough, my ongoing fic A crime to outlive him is reaching a climax I simply do not want to write. How does someone get to a point where everything he might have to say is sure to hurt, anger or embarrass someone?

I don't see anything wrong with you complaining about your home country's politics. Come on, everybody does it (except me because I'm so afraid of flamewars)! And as for offending people, well, unless you're me, I think it's better to be honest about your opinions than try to avoid offending people. There's always friends-lock.

Don't let your fear of offending people stop you from writing. I particularly appreciate your frank, intelligent insights, even if I disagree with you (though I cannot remember the last time...).

In any event, a good debate amongst LJ friends could be stimulating, as long as "you offended me" is not used as a logical fallacy.

I like the new pro-decorum society we're getting this week. Maybe you can treasure it for a couple weeks, too, and post more pro-love and dignity essays. I won't even tear up marriage until June. How's that for a pledge?

American conservatives are used to be offended and pissed of at what they hear about themselves in the press. The American press, however, are not usually prone to actually having much in the way of reasons to bag on them. You, however, by your record, invariably have well thought-out reasons for your points of view, more than just "They're not in our party" bullshit. Facing stiff opposition is good for things, because it tends to weed the wheat from the chaff. That is provided they're open to it.

Sometimes I feel offended, but you are an equal opportunity offender, with pointed comments about lots of different people and places, so I try never to take it personally. Plus, of course, I think much of the time you have valid points, some of which I agree with, and some not.

If I were to give any advice it would be not to get offended when you find you have offended someone; but that's just me.

As for shots at America, as an American, I always feel offended when someone else(as in someone not a citizen of the US) says something about America, even if it's true and I say it myself! This is just patriotism, and everyone should have it, but patriotism shouldn't prevent people from hearing and seeing the truth or different views and opinions, or thinking for that matter, which I'm afraid is what happens sometimes, all over the world.

Well... I can't speak for everyone, no matter how I try... but part of why I enjoy reading you is that you think, and you disagree on many points.

Do you have any idea how hard it is to find someone who can properly express their views, is bright enough to think them out and is on the internet regularly? AND has a sense of humor that generally makes sense?

Try a milder one. See what happens. Don't take disagreement as "I hate you" and mebbie see what happens?
