Kulfi is the best ice-cream in the world. And if an Italian tells you so, man, you'd better believe it. Drawing on the Indian talent with spices, herbs and flavourings of every kind, it has a variety of powerful yet subtle flavours generally based on pistachio and saffron. Kulfi, I tell you, is the Kaisar-i-Hind of ice creams.

Word has come through, evidently, to Tesco, Britain's largest retailer. They decided to create a Westernized line of kulfi ice creams, keeping the flavour, but presenting in the local guise - on a stick. And they do seem to have really gone to town with it. They must have got an excellent recipe, for the ice-cream itself tasted just like it should.

Only they coated it with chocolate, which has absolutely nothing to do with it, and whose taste is killed and neutralized by the kulfi flavour. Because, you see, ice cream on a stick in Britain always has to be coated. Never mind whether it ruins the whole idea.

That reminds me of an old showbiz joke about a writer, a director and a producer. As soon as LJ will allow me to post more than a few sentences I'll put it up here for you.

I love the real kulfi flavor. I had it when I lived in Japan, at a great Indian restaurant... in Japan. It was so wonderful, I have hankered after it ever since.

I've never liked ice cream on a stick for the very reason you mention: it's always coated with that chocolate shell stuff, and I don't like that.

It is not actually necessary, and if it is there, it does not have to be chocolate-flavoured. I know of fruit-flavoured ice creams coated in fruit flavoured ice, for instance. It is just mental lazyness.

... chocolate-coated kulfi?

I love chocolate. I love kulfi. but together?

...

...

er. no.

(as someone who has pretty muce been eating - and making - kulfi since childhood, the idea of chocolate-covered kulfi makes me wonder what is wrong with these people. haha, whoops)

How are you?

MAKING kulfi?
Will you marry me?

Seriously, I am a bit tired from getting a large number of mostly very interesting books (someone was throwing them away, and I went and picked them up instead) but not too bad. My mother is visiting next week, the rent is paid, and all's well with the world. And you apparently are seeing a light at the end of the tunnel, which absolutely delights me.
