I required audio files of "House of the Rising Sun", without specifying a performer, from a file sharing site. Within a few hours I received performances ascribed to the Doors, the Rolling Stones, the Eagles, the Moody Blues and the Kinks. They all were the same identical version of the legendary version by the Animals.

Arrgh. You got me wracking my brain & music collection the last ten minutes, to remember who in the world did this one astonishing cover of that tune. I don't have it, but I heard it somewhere once (don't you hate that?), and can't for the life of me recall any detail except that it was so great.

That said, I'd love to hear Polyphonic Spree cover "House of The Rising Sun"....

Got it now! As you say, very good. She has changed a good bit of the lyrics, but that's OK, the heart of it is there.

BTW, I now must add Van Morrison to the list. How profoundly deaf must you be to mistake Eric Burdon for Van Morrison?

Update: the Animals performance has now turned up under the names of the Mamas and Papas and Led Zeppelin.
