My enthusiasm for Bruce Springsteen and his band has never changed, and as keyboard player, Federici was responsible for many of its most memorable moments. And he did not die of any rock-star ailment, but, tragically, of skin cancer - so we really have to say, what a sad loss, as for any friend who left us too soon. Rest in peace and may the sound of your anthems escort you to a better world.

It's the summer of 1985 and I have just turned 15. We're at the campground near the beach at S.Pietro. Davide, Roberto and Gianni Bruno think it's funny to sing "Born in the USA" every time I walk past. I have a crush on Davide that I can't bring myself to admit and I find this seranade excruciatingly embarassing. All I can think to do is to plaintively (and futilely) rebut, "but I was *born* in Belgium!!"

IN the same year, I travelled to the US and actually heard, from a distance, the sound of Springsteen's closing concert of the Born In The USA tour, in New Jersey.
