Whatever position one takes on "gay marriage", one must declare that the form of words chosen by a Mexican Cardinal is a disgrace. As a Catholic, I wish to disassociate myself from it, and I intend to write to him and complain.
Cardinal Compares Gay Marriage to Cockroaches

"PA"

A cardinal denounced the legalisation of gay marriages today, saying it would be like considering cats or cockroaches part of a family.

Javier Lozano Barragan, the Vatican’s healthy secretary, complained that defenders of homosexual marriage argue that people living together constitute a family.

“They even give cockroaches the rank of family now because they live under the same roof,” Lozano said. “If there’s a cat, a dog, two lesbians and everything living there, it’s a family.”

Cardinal Lozano, a Mexican, was complaining about a proposal by Spain’s government to legalise same-sex marriages.

“One of the great goals of the culture of death is destruction of the family,” Lozano said, “so on all sides, not merely in Spain, there are these proposals that say that the family consists of all those who live beneath the same roof.”

Lozano was participating in the 48th International Euchartistic Congress, which has drawn thousands of Catholics to the Mexican city of Guadalajara.

This assumes that the Cardinal was arguing from personal experience. From what we know of one or two of his colleagues (e.g. Cardinal Rimbert Weakland), I would not rule it out.
