I don't know what the Hell is the matter with Patrick Buchanan. He is digging his own grave as a conservative and as an influence. He has got to the point where only Barrack Obama draws more criticism from the conservative commentariat than he does. And in spite of his Jew-bashing, which I hate, I can't help feeling that this is a pity, because there is a grave need of a conservative criticism of the imperial and poorly grounded policy of the current US.

Isn't Buchanan the one who made some comment about 9/11 being God's punishment for NYC since so many Jews and gays lived there? Or am I mistaking him for someone else?

You are mistaking him for somebody else. He is a Jew-basher, but not quite so crude as that. It would hurt his own self-image to appeal to the lowest level quite so frankly. No, he has been writing a book in which he claims that France and Britain ought to have let Germany invade Poland and then go to war with Russia.

OK, I'm misremembering who said that then. (I've probably blocked it out.) There was a huge dustup over it, rightly so, and whoever the speaker was backpedaled and backed off. I didn't know about the history book, though.
