The Catholic bishops of Florida have demanded that the state governor put a moratorium on executions. Now, don't get me wrong, I am against the death penalty. But this is the same bench of bishops who were all unavoidably detained when the previous governor was fighting to stop Terri Schiavo being starved to death.

It won't happen. Other religious groups have asked for the same sort of moratorium and it has not happened.

Of course it won't. This is gesture politics. What I am saying is that when there was a real life to be saved, at the cost of some unpopularity with the media, this same bunch was nowhere to be seen.

In defense, there were many priests, nuns as well as ministers of other faiths that were involved with the protest. As far as the Catholic church as an enity stepping up and taking a stand, no they did not. They left it to the civil courts and the mess that followed.

Oh, absolutely. The Pope himself, who was dying, was heard, and hundreds of priests and laymen did their bit - including me. That is just what makes the silence of the Florida Bishops so despicable.

I could never understand it either. There are other areas of the country in which the bishops would have been quite vocal. Boston. New York or Chicago. All would have had a statement from their leaders.

I wanted to blame it on the fact Catholics are a minority here. More Southern Baptists and fundamental Christians in the state. All the same, these groups came out and made protests regarding the situation.

Maybe I'm an unreasonable optimist. Time has elapsed between Terri Schiavo's death and now - maybe their consciences have been formed a bit since then?
