Meme swunked from
kennahijja, to relax a bit.
Write your answers on your blogs & replace any question that you dislike with a new question formulated by yourself. I don't do the tagging thing for fear of angry f-listers with pitchforks, but if you want to take, take :).
1. How has LJ changed your life?
It has been socially the best time I've ever had. First time in my life that people actually came forwards to get to know me. I am socially awkward at best, and I am grateful to every member of my f-list.
2. What do you do before bedtime?
Write, read, watch the evening news, surf the net.
3. What will your dream wedding be like?
(NOTE: this meme has a lot of wedding questions. I will answer them all on the basis of what I wished were true, being only too aware that I have blown it. These are all "If-I-had-married-Debbie" answers.) Both my brother and my sister managed to get married in one of the most awesome churches in Rome: my sister in Trinita' dei Monti, the one at the top of the Spanish Steps, and my brother in Santa Maria in Trastevere, one of the most ancient churches in Rome. For a while, there was a joke that if I ever married my family would probably procure St.Peter's. Both my siblings have had terrific ceremonies and parties, and both their marriages have been so far very successful, so I would want something just like theirs.
4. What is the city of your dreams and why?
Milan, because I was born and brought up there. Oxford, because you do not live and study there without being touched. Venice - and anyone who even asks why will only prove scarily ignorant or insensitive. But really I would like to live on the Alps.
5. Are you an introvert or extrovert?
Extro.
6. Which is more blessed, loving someone or being loved by someone?
There is nothing on Earth like being in love. As to the opposite, I only know the love of family and friends, so it would be a matter of comparing apples and oranges.
7. Do you trust easily?
I learned not to, but my instinct is to trust.
8. If the person you secretly like is already attached, what would you do?
Encourage her to stay with the person she is with and hope they will be happy. And don't tell me that this sounds too heroic for words: it is what I did when it happened.
9. Is there anything that has made you unhappy these days?
Lots of things.
10. What is your best quality?
Intelligence.
11. Is being tagged fun?
Depends on the questions.
12. How do you see yourself?
Fat, aging, and in thrall to destructive inner fears.
13. Who are currently the most important people to you?
My family and friends.
14. What kind of person do you think the person who tagged you is?
She did not really tag me, but
kennahijja is a bewildering mix of genius (and when I say genius I mean genius - as in Thomas Mann, Beethoven, Keats, Virgil), natural kindness, and hidebound ideological nonsense.
15. Would you rather be single & rich or married but poor?
What a silly question. Married and rich, and with Debbie for choice. If not DEbbie, then a young Charlotte Rampling would do.
16. How many children do you want to have, if any?
I am too old-and-poor to have children now. (If I were old-and-rich it would not matter.) If I had ever got married, and allowing of course that the other half agreed with me, I would have wanted a few more than average - four or five, perhaps. More people are more fun, and more possibilities to watch as they grow up.
17. What's better to give or to receive?
I enjoy receiving things, but giving things makes me very happy. Especially if they are the work of my own hands, such as drawings, stories, or even such things as CDs I burned myself.
18. Would you have 100% safe sex with a stranger for $10,000,000?
Sure. But I do not believe there is such a thing as 100% safe sex.
19. What were your parents going to name you if you'd been born the opposite gender?
I am pretty sure, for family reasons, I would have got the name my sister actually got - that is, Donatella.
20. Name one of your favourite scenes from a movie.
Hard to choose - there are so many. But if I absolutely have to choose one, I would say the moment Rick shoots the Nazi officer in Casablanca. The whole story has been building up to that moment, and it is immensely satisfactory that it happens as it does - in an almost muffled way. And Humphrey Bogart looking menacing is even better than Marlon Brando looking menacing, and God knows that is menacing enough.
