...could one find a university student - a UNIVERSITY STUDENT - who, on being left a bottle full of vodka, would conclude that the best thing to do was pour it down the sink. Do you want to destroy every stereotype in existence, young woman? http://aphoenix2007.livejournal.com/176368.html?view=1005040

The entry would appear to be f-locked. But I've done the same thing, though it might have been scotch. And this might or might not have been in my student days. :)

OH dear, sorry. The story is that my friend who signs herself [profile] aphoenix2007, who is a charming Chinese-American college student (at New York State University, I think) who for some reason compares herself to Eeyore, found that bottle after her first-year house share had disbanded. Which shows that not only her, but her friends too, were totally non-cliched.

The vodka could perhaps be explained by a lack of citrus fruit and tonic water, but scotch? Please tell me it wasn't a single malt!

I have no idea. It was a long time ago. But as I recall, whatever it was was about 14 years old at the time. (Dimple? I seem to remember an oddly-shaped bottle...)

You must mean Pinch. Not the best stuff, but still a waste.

*L*
Well I poured an entire bottle of Tequila down the sink. =P
I've also only been drunk once in my whole life and that was in front of my mom, so I totally fail at living up to college expectations *L*

I'm glad to hear there are others. ^__^

Well, you also are on my f-list, you know!

I can truthfully say I was never fully sober from day to day from my Sixth Form days through University and indeed until my thirtieth year, and am none the worse for it.

Mind, I avoided vodka, sedulously. Whisky, wine, port, sherry, madeira, brandy, real ale, real cider, and perry, are enough for any good man.

I am on my friend's side in this. I have only been drunk three times in my life, did not enjoy the feeling, and never tried again. I think it even ruins your appreciation of good wine. And I had this weird idea that one went to university to study.

As Winston said.

I'm not taking sides, dear fellow. Nor did I say I was drunk every day; I was very rarely drunk. I simply wasn't sans a drink. My palate is intact, and it certainly didn't do me any academic harm, actually. One had rather a good result, in fact.

Perhaps I should resort to those ghastly emoticons to convey tone in leaving comments; it might serve us all better if I did so. Is there one that universally symbolises cheekiness and gentle teasing?

This one works, I think: ;)

Amazingly, these emoticons really do serve a purpose sometimes. And so does a nice drink! ;)

It's not about you. Look around yourself. Is it not the case that a very significant proportion of Britons, especially but not only young, think that getting drunk is a purpose in itself? I find that dangerous and disgusting, but above all, I find it sad - as representing people so ignorant of the nature of enjoyment and pleasure that they stun themselves into incapacity and unonsciousness in the firm and pathetic belief that they are actually having fun.

When I was in college, a doctor prescribed codeine to me for bronchitis, which horrified the university doctor, who told me to get rid of them. So I did, flushing them down the toilet. My roommate got really mad at me for it too. I never did understand taking pills for fun.

Codeine only ever made me feel better and sleep. I love it when I get some Canadian Tylenol - the sleep is what I need most when I hurt. But I agree, taking pills for fun is ridiculous. It's hard enough dealing with side effects when you know what it's supposed to be doing.

Erg, codeine had the opposite effect on me! I would get desperately sleepy, but would not actually be able to sleep. Instead I would stay up all night twitching. So I was pretty happy to flush them. But if they worked for me as they did for you, perhaps I wouldn't have been so happy to toss them.

Well I guess I'm the typical uni student then. :p I'd drink anything and everything left to me, even tequila (which I hate drinking).

You can things with alcohol besides drink it - cooking with it comes to mind.

Mind, I have not done so with vodka, but I've cooked with beer, rum and wine. I should try something with vodka next week ...

Here, here!

I agree, cooking with alcohol is the way to go. I've had a lot of success with both beer and wine; must try rum. Not sure what I'd use vodka for - other than just adding it over a meal and setting fire to it! bdundar, please let me know how your efforts with vodka go!
I suppose their are alcohols that should be drunk rather than used in cooking, but they'd be outside my price range.

That is something I do not need to be taught. I invented a dish of beans, onion and red wine when I was 14 and dedicated it to a friend of mine - who was flattered out of her wits and would never visit afterwards without asking for "her" beans. YOu have to remember that I am Italian, and good food and wine are two of the things I am an heir to. However, it is my view that it is impossible to use vodka for cooking; its peculiar combination of bitter and sour taste suits neither ordinary foods nor sweets.

At any rate, one, this note was a joke, two, if it had any point at all it was disapproval of the sorry modern habit of wasting good drinks on getting stoned out of your skull.
