I am in the wrong country
Oct. 7th, 2008 03:46 pmSo far the great Dies Irae of the banks has nearly spared Italy. Italians look on it as someone else's problem. The one great bank attacked by the stock exchanges, Unicredit, reacted vigorously by recapitalizing itself from its own shareholders - something that German, British or American banks under attack do not dare do for fear it will make things worse. The traditional stinginess of Italian banks has so far paid off. I say so far, because of course one never knows. But do not be surprised if in the next few days some Italian institutions follow the path of Banco de Santander and go on a buying spree. Shares across the West are getting too cheap not to be tempting.
