British media, including the supposedly conservative ones, are supporting Obama and (especially) hounding Sarah Palin, with a ferocity unknown even to their American counterparts, and looking more like the Daily Kos than anything, so to speak, human. This is appalling in itself, and may well end up being disastrous if by any chance McCain and Palin win. These creatures are planting poisonous ideas in the average British reader, which will take decades to weed away. And incidentally, it does nothing to disprove my view that at the roots of all serious modern political conflict in the West there is abortion; for the British media and establishment, including the so-called conservatives, are completely sold on the practice, and anti-abortion forces are marginalized to an extent unknown and hard to believe in Italy or America. This goes back a long time - Margaret Thatcher always voted in favour of abortion. Now, Sarah Palin, simply by being who she is, is a living rebuke to all the abortion-is-necessary crowd; and this explains the ferocious hatred and the avalanche of pathological lies with which this attractive, polite, competent female politician has been welcomed. Find me another explanation that makes sense! It also accounts for the complete silence that has been enforced on anything that might make Obama, the most pro-abortion candidate in history, look bad or even moderately dubious. It is not about race; if Judge Clarence Thomas were running for President, he would be treated like Palin has been. It is not even about party; if Condoleeza Rice had run and got the Republican nomination, you can bet your life that she would have had a much smoother ride than Palin. She, after all, has no children. You cannot underrate the power of repressed and concealed guilt feelings, crawling under the skin of all the career women who got rid of unwanted babies in order to please bosses and boyfriends, and indeed among all the men who were complicit in their crimes or even demanded them; when faced with a brilliantly successful career woman who not only had five children, but opted against aborting even the disabled one. (I don't suppose it helps that she is beautiful and looks ten years younger than her age. The sheer unfairness of the distribution of beauty is salt on any open wound, and the wound in question is painful enough in the first place.) Sarah Palin is a mirror who tells them the truth about themselves; and it is a truth that they cannot bear to see.

You are trying to reason with someone who has plenty of reasons not to reason. I, on the other hand, am trying to beat down her psychological barriers. Good luck, but I do not think you will get anywhere with her.

Sweetie, with all due respect, you did not even try reason. Your very first response was "the lie machine got to you too" and therefore, I think she was right to call you on the fact that you have spent a lot of time and energy refusing to engage the debate.

You're a smart man; you can do better than this.

I meant exactly what I said. From the beginning, this woman showed that she was not out to reason but to rant. Anyone who denies that Sarah Palin is beautiful has a serious perception problem. And I absolutely refuse to be sidetracked trying to correct her on facts when the problem is not with the facts but with her attitude. My diagnosis is that she would never in a million years be convinced that there is anything to be said for Sarah Palin, not if every last citizen of Alaska came and testified on her behalf upon oath. She more than wants, she needs, to believe that the governor of Alaska is a monster, and that for reasons that have nothing to do with Palin's performance in office. I went for the core, and as it happens I was immediately confirmed in my diagnosis.

Incidentally, I am not your or anyone's "sweetie", and I will thank you to avoid that term in the future. Unless, of course, your name happens to be Debbie Wallace.

I call everybody "sweetie" and I've called you that before. I think you're feeling a mite touchy today (which also probably goes to the core, as it were).

Perhaps I put up with it before. In this context, a less touchy person than me would find it patronizing and undesirable.

I have skimmed over the majority of these replies and it seems to me that albeit fpb sometimes writes brilliantly (which is why i added him to friends in the first place) in this case he is being a small minded misogynist who seems to believe that Sarah Palin has qualifications to be Vice President of America. He has not disputed any facts with anyone and rebukes those who want to debate such facts or factors as the small minded stubborn brainwashed people as in fact, he himself is. Do you really think that a woman who became governor of a state with less people in it than Austin, Tx is qualified? A woman who was mayor of a tiny ass hobunk town that abused her power? The simple facts of the matter is that experience comes with dealing with people and things. She has never had to deal with the national spotlight anywhere near the degrees of the other 3 people in the race, she has no experience in Washington, which she boldly proposes as a bonus to herself! What job interview do you know of where you go to the potential employer and say "I have no experience whatsoever!! I am PERFECT for the job of running the biggest economy and jingoist nation in the world!" My girlfriend has Personally met more world heads of state than this farce of a choice, which by the way qualifies her to run nothing, she is merely a 22yo genius biochemist.

You sir, were added to my friends list because occassionally you wrote something brilliant. In this matter however, you seem to have lost your mind as well as your ability to think intelligently.

The "anyone" in question is one person. And it takes some imagination to call someone a small-minded misogynist because he defends a woman, even if she is a woman you do not like. Your adherence to the Lie Factory version of events is so complete and uncritical that there is no point my even addressing any of your misguided points, because when the whole picture is false from left to right and from top to bottom, it hardly mattes which of the details is falser.

By the way, twerpo, your description might as well suit Abraham Lincoln, elected President from a redneck state with practically no Washington experience. Or that nasty aggressive plebeian hated by the whole Washington establishment, Andrew Jackson. Or Theodore Roosevelt. Or even Truman. Or those inexperienced bible-belt redneck state governors, Carter and Clinton. The American system is designed to let in outsiders and avoid the formation of an upper crust; for which you should be devoutly thankful, rather than queue up to swallow establishment lies when one such outsider upsets the applecart. We desperately need such a system in Europe, where party rule has destroyed anything but the semblance of democracy. And what I complain of in Obama, abortion apart, is not that he is an outsider, but that he is not outsider enough.

Except for patronizing Americans and political idiocy, I feel quite well, thank you.
