Look at this video. The people here are in the presence of one of the greatest musicians in the world, singing one of the greatest songs ever composed - David Olney and 1917. (Never mind the silly song that takes up the first two or so minutes; you just wait.)

Listen to the morons talking above the music continuously. I have rarely been so angry.

Did you change the embed code midstream? I started watching and couldn't figure out what you were so worked up about, because there seemed to be neither any singing nor anyone talking above it. *shrug*

The preview image looks different now.

I cannot imagine what happened to you. I get it just right. As I warned, the first two or three minutes are taken with a rather silly song - then comes the unforgettable "1917". Try again.

If not, try this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pRx1eUePKug. Have some patience; downloading seems to be slow. And then there is the silly opening song. But when you get to 1917, you will know what I am talking about.

I worked with a guy who went to see Ella Fitzgerald in the late 80s at a small club and sat next to an obnoxious Frenchman (his term) that complained, consistently but not constantly, through the first twenty minutes or so that she wasn't as good as she used to be.

I asked him if he was tempted to cold cock the guy.

"I wasn't the only one."

Would cold cocking have been enough?

Why didn't anyone tell that woman to shut up? She has the most penetrating voice, and keeps yattering stupidly about nothing. Argh!

I know. Maybe they were afraid that it would start a row and make things even worse.

But what I really want is to spread the word about this ignored giant. Here is a man who has written songs as good as the best that Schubert, Schumann, Bob Dylan or Bruce Springsteen have ever done, and he is practically unknown. Although, give them credit, Linda Rondstadt and Emmylou Harris have done a breathtaking version of 1917 together - that is how I discovered the man myself.

The song reminds me of a favorite, "Roads to Moscow."
