I don't think even he thought it witty. It is the kind of assessment one would hear in a none-too-bright middle-class Italian home - oh, he's a smart chap, nice tan, nicely spoken. And twenty years in politics have not taught this man that there is a difference between the domestic behaviour of a self-indulgent paterfamilias and the public behaviour of a national leader.

Why did they vote for him? (I abstained.) Because the opposition was worse.

This story is hilarious. And I thought Prince Philip (Queen Elizabeth's husband) led the pack for off-color remarks, but Berlusconi is giving him a run for his money.
