I had heard of this for years and I always thought it sounded super odd, but then I bought a CD last week of Bing Crosby Christmas carols and this is the last one on there. It is lovely.
I love who they have him listed as "older fellows" And *sigh* Bing I just love the old fashioned way of speaking. It's so much more unassuming and pleasant then you tend to hear now a days.
What annoyed me about the recording is how Bowie's voice was allowed to completely overpower Bing's - something I am sure neither musician wanted. Nevertheless, of all pop musicians since Elvis (excluded), Bowie is the one whom I would most easily pair with one of the greats of the past - I mean, the pairing never once occurred to me, but once I heard it, it felt natural. Bowie has, in my view, quite simply the finest voice in pop, an instrument worthy of any use, and enough musicianship to use it properly in any situation. It is quite ridiculous that he should also be the most handsome man ever to sing in pop - well, life bloody well is not fair, is it now?
