More even than his exceptional coolness in a desperately difficult situation, it is the fact that Captain Chesley B.Sullenberger III, as the plane was slowly sinking into the Hudson, went through the aisle twice to make sure all the passengers and crew were gone, that tells us the kind of man he is.

I didn't know that! I was impressed enough that he landed so gently on the water (crashed so gently into the water) and that every person who had been aboard the plane got away from it alive, but that's even more impressive.

He also had an extraordinarily small margin of error in terms of the aim and timing of the landing, in order to avoid colliding with nearby buildings.

Never mind the buildings - the Hudson was full of boats (the plane was surrounded by them in minutes), and he managed to miss them all.

Dude. I hadn't even thought to consider the amount of traffic on the Hudson; that's just beyond awesome.

This actually falls in line with the sort of service I've gotten from crews of aircrafts. Flying might suck, but it's not because of the people who work there.

That story totally made my day -- it isn't often that a plane crash is such an occasion for giving thanks to God!

Since pictures of the pilot-hero seem to be hard to come by right now, here's one I found after some digging:

More men like this, please.

Defines "The Right Stuff" - but I wish they'd talk about the co-pilot, too. More than enough work for two.

This man restored my faith in aviation, namely the possibility that you CAN actually land on water and not die. I will watch the security video, the part about deploying the inflatable boats, with less skepticism.

Deo gratias :)

This whole thing is just such an awesome story. :)

Indeed.

Did you see the video of the landing?

And evidently the man's heroic conscientiousness extends even to library books.

When I witness something exceptional, sometimes I express my emotion by standing up and saluting. This time, however, I saluted while laughing. Professional ethics indeed! But really, what a remarkable man.
