I just get so sick of it. I have joined an HP community dedicated to crossovers, because I like HP and crossovers and thought I could get some fun. Like Hell I could. Although the community is not supposed to be dedicated to slash, literally every single story I have seen since day one is slash. It seems that people only want to cross over, say, Buffy and Harry, for the dubious pleasure of having Spike bugger Harry, or the reverse. For the love of Heaven, people, are you even capable of thinking of something above crotch level?

Argh, tell me about it. For that reason (and general difficulty in finding good writers), I nearly write more fanfic than I read at this point.

Incidentally, last week I surprised myself by having a good (or at least rather insistent) idea for an HP fic. I'm not sure how well I'll pull it off, but at least there won't be any slash in it. Would you be interested in betaing?

With pleasure.
I don't know how others beta - except for Hijja - but I just put in comments in annotation form on Word documents. So, if you want to make things easy for me, send me the story as a Word document. Thanks.

Cool, that should work fine. I just tested with the original Word version of your annotated "Eugenics and Other Evils", and I'm pleased to report that the newest versions of OpenOffice finally display annotations in a useful way.

I probably won't have the story ready for beta until later this week, but I'll send it to you when it's ready.

I got out of it. I don't want to be absolutist, because slash can be good and I have written a couple myself, but I think that a community dedicated to non-slash, non-porn HP would stand a chance of being rather popular. And would you believe, I had to quit a Calvin and Hobbes community because someone posted an explicit account of... well, I'd rather not say it.

Then found one. I'd be delighted to read, and possibly contribute. But I'm not going near any site that mixes children and porn.

I'd rather not. Can you imagine what would happen, what with my fandom image and all? But if you found one, I'll join.

Rule 34 prevails again. :(

I absolutely adore crossovers too, but in fact I don't usually think crossover pairings of any sort work well, let alone unlikely slash pairings! It's pretty amazing how much people love slash! It's not my thing, so it can make finding good fic harder, so I feel your pain!

Argh, I just realized I put an exclamation mark after every sentence up there, which makes it somewhat nonsensical. Sorry!

It did sound a bit... enthusiastic. 8-)

funny timing, I was just saying to another Marvel fan how desperately we needed an active community for something other than slash.

I've got fics that are character pieces, or father son type stories for Toro and The Torch, and these things are basically homeless, a few sites are nice and will let me put art up and such that's not slashy so long a the characters are there, but fics tend not to get the same pass art does.

btw, you know about the HP community [livejournal.com profile] omniocular? It's set up for Gen stories, so you know things that have to be above crotch level. It's one of my favorite HP comms ever, especially given how focused the rest of the fandom areas are on ships, it's a nice change of pace.

If you think it is necessary, you should try and set one up. I cannot, for two reasons. First, I simply do not want to have any more to do with the bigoted gay area - I have had enough of them to last me two lifetimes, and if my name appeared next to a community dedicated to no slash and no porn, you can just imagine what the fandom-wankers and the other haters would make of it. I have had quite enough threats of male rape, thank you very much. And second, such a community would have to be moderated, otherwise you would soon have someone slip in porn or slash without telling anyone. And I do not have the time or patience.

I don't really have the inclination to either.
As you say it would have to be moderated and my last stint with moderation has lead to two years of harassment which recently took the form of a Lawyer letter to LJ trying to get some of my journal entries pulled for defamation.

I had the audacity to write a public entry stating that I had not, as was being said by this person, followed her to any yahoogroups and attacked her there. Such evil on my part *head desk*

So yeah, I don't want to mod or be in charge or anything ^^;;
It's why I'm encouraging another, she is creating a non slash specific site so I may just try and add to the gen content there if it goes live.

Put it this way: you ought to have plenty of plot ideas for supervillains after experiences like that.

A rec community might be better than a fic community. If your goal is to aggregate and increase the visibility of good non-slash fics, posting recs is an easier proposition than convincing authors to join and post.

Recs also have much less potential for Internet Drama(tm) than direct posting of fics, as "why'd you mod my post?" is a much different question than "why didn't you rec my fic?".

Fanwriters who insist on slashing every single main character are from the school of what my friends and I call "Why-dogs-lick-their-balls theory of fanfic"--they just do it because they CAN.

I've read some slash stories which were very well written and believable, but a huge amount of them are stories with characters who have no resemblance to the names attached, and are what used to be called in zine fandom PWP (plot, what plot?)

Oh, P.S.

Well written crossovers rock so hard! Some of my favorite fan stories have been crossovers, and one of the best ones I've ever read was a totally gen story, no relationships whatever, that crossed Rat Patrol with Quantum Leap.

The most crossed-over by far universes are of course HP and BtVS. Now the best crossover I ever read of any of them was by a writer whom I vastly admire, but who has a bad habit of unnecessary slash and porn. She staretd MAGNIFICENTLY; the first three chapters of that crossover are of imperial quality, I cannot praise them enough. Then in the fourth chapter she introduced a slash element which, I told her at the time, was cliched. With the fifth chapter, she stopped writing it, and has never come back to it. I call that tragic.
