Cheap pleasures

I miscalculated the starting amount of chickpeas and ended up with an absolutely COLOSSAL amount of humus. Just as well that I love the stuff and that eating it is never a chore. In fact, what with humus, chestnuts to be roasted, and fresh tomato for salad, this is going to be a very pleasant couple of food days.

There's an awful lot of pleasures to be enjoyed in life, even if you are poor.

Hummus is awesome, esp. on wheat crackers. Just for lulz, over here humus with one l means the decomposed stuff you put on your garden. ;)

Mmmmmmmmmm, humus. I wish I had some handy now.

hummus even.

How do you roast your chestnuts? I have yet to find a way that doesn't result in raw fingertips from peeling.

I confess to hummus curiosity as well. Is tahini necessary?

You just put up with the raw fingertips. But you can ease the problem a bit by crushing the cooked but still unshelled chestnut gently between the table-top and a cloth-covered fingertip. If you do it properly, the meat will stay in one piece while the wooden shell will be cracked enough to break it and slip it off.

I've gotten on pretty well just using toasted sesame.

I love chickpeas. (We call 'em garbanzo beans over here.) But I'm too lazy to make hummus. So I just bake them with olive oil and cayenne pepper -- a nice healthy alternative to potato chips.

No. I bake them whole. They're nice and crunchy.

Get a blender. I don't know how it is over there, but kitchen gadgets of all kinds - even breadmakers and small ovens - are remarkably cheap over here.

Could I borrow your Latin skills for a moment? How would one translate "to love anew" into Latin? "amare de novo"? "de novo amare"?

[identity profile] fpb.livejournal.com 2009-12-06 05:46 am (UTC)(link)
Both would be OK, because word order in Latin is not fixed (except for some basic rules). However, I don't quite like de novo for "again" - I would have to hit my dictionaries. I'll be back to you in a short while.

I think that ex novo might be an option, although it would sound very strange as a family name.

[identity profile] dustthouart.livejournal.com 2009-12-06 09:29 am (UTC)(link)
What do you think of the following quote from Aquinas:
Secundum quod unumquodque habet esse de novo, sic de novo competit ei fieri; nam eius est fieri cuius est et esse, ad hoc enim aliquid fit ut sit.

He's talking about the production of the rational soul, but I think it kind of works. Plus, if all goes well, we'll be the conduits for God to produce some new rational souls, lol.

I'm also looking at this one:
Oportet igitur quod cum eam consequitur, aliqua dispositione de novo addita elevetur, quam dicimus gloriae lumen: quo quidem intellectus noster a Deo perficitur, qui solus secundum suam naturam hanc propriam formam habet.

The Betrothed wants it to be a quote from something, for reasons I can't comprehend well.

What bothers me is that all your quotations are from mediaeval Latin. My ear inevitably hears de novo as an Italianism - di nuovo. ex novo, on the other hand, is certainly classical, and represents the same usage as the standard definition of God's creative act as being ex nihilo, out of nothing.

[identity profile] fpb.livejournal.com 2009-12-06 11:39 am (UTC)(link)
Mp. According to Wikipedia, ex novo and de novo are synonymous. Well, do what you wish.

It occurred to me that some future person might be able to deduce something I don't want deduced from my second comment, so I deleted it. I hope that's ok. I can go into more detail privately if you like.

never you mind. But have you noticed [personal profile] filialucis' excellent suggestion? (Not that it is surprising; she has more Latin in her little finger than I in my whole body.)

Suggestion: denuo amare.

YESS!!

Yes, there is, and thank you for the reminder.

*hugs* *hugs*
How is your finger? And everything else? I worry about you and your husband.

[identity profile] super-pan.livejournal.com 2009-12-06 03:38 pm (UTC)(link)
The finger is healing great! I hope to have skin sometime next week! As for everything else, I consider us to be extremely fortunate, and except for stress and fatigue, we are also pretty happy. So we're doing pretty well, all things considered.
