The original neo-conservatives were former Trotskyists. Science Fiction author David Brin has theorized in the past on his blog that it's not that they gave up on being socialists, but started think tanks and usch to take down Western Capitalist society from the inside, hence decisions like the Iraq war and the entire political activity of "conservatives" at the highest levels. Articles like that make it seem like not so far-fetched a theory...
