That socialist sports thing is really ridiculous, but I gotta admit soccer lost me at the 0-0 score thing. How do you determine who wins or goes to the next level of a championship if the game has no score?
am getting off line in a few, as the library will be closing soon. And no I haven't sat here all day like a lardass, I was here in the morning and came back again later. LOL So I'll have to answer posts tomorrow.
Normally, you go to extra time - play two extra halves of fifteen minutes each. If even that fails, you go to penalties - taking a series of five shots each at goal, with the keeper defending. (Bear in mind that this is necessary whether the score be 0-0 or 6-6.) That is how Italy lost the final in 1994 in the USA, to Brazil. Incidentally, I was house-sharing with a Brazilian lady at the time, and while I would not have minded, she got so tense that she withdrew to watch the game in her own room. At the end of it, I knocked at her door and told her that the best team on the day had won.
This isn't actually serious. Every few years, when the American public is again made aware of the international status of Soccer, breaks out some wisecracks, many of which make it into the media. Offensive, probably, but it is what it is.
This is probably both the most offensive, and the most humorous of this latest batch: http://www.theonion.com/video/soccer-officially-announces-it-is-gay,17603/
Not so. I recall a rather amusing satirical article about "universal gun care" a while back. That being said, this article does not appear to be in the same vein. Yet while the overall accusation is silly, the point about low scores is a real reason many Americans give for not being able to get excited about the sport.
Funnily enough, this article was the call-in topic of the evening on a radio show I listen to sometimes. Very few callers figured soccer really *was* a socialist game, even though the host egged them on a bit. In the end, of course, he said he never figured political ideology ever entered into it, that the article's author was just some kind of narrow-minded ideologue. Still, he said, it was nice to get two hours worth of mileage out of one topic. It doesn't happen often.
