malfunctioning disk cleanup utility

My Disk Cleanup utility is clearly malfunctioning. The amounts of space to be cleared it shows does not correspod to the sum of its parts, and it never seems to finish at all. I imagine I should get in touch with Microsoft, but their site is huge and I don't understand it - does anyone have any advice?

The one that removes unwanted files and cookies from a disk. If you don't use it regularly, crap accumulates and slows down the machine - as is happening now with mine.

Is it the one which comes with windows XP or one from a 3rd party? I know some of them are set to run all the time. If you have Norton utilities it has a decent cleaner but in my experience all Windows systems need reloading from time to time. Nothing seems to work properly.

Windows XP. Do you mean starting back right from the installation disk? Incidentally, I never use Norton and I shall always try to do right and be good so that God will never force me to.
