From the Gospel according to Mark

10:23 And Jesus looked round about, and saith unto his disciples, How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God! 10:24 And the disciples were astonished at his words. But Jesus answereth again, and saith unto them, Children, how hard is it for them that trust in riches to enter into the kingdom of God! 10:25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God. 10:26 And they were astonished out of measure, saying among themselves, Who then can be saved? 10:27 And Jesus looking upon them saith, With men it is impossible, but not with God: for with God all things are possible.

12:41 And Jesus sat over against the treasury, and beheld how the people cast money into the treasury: and many that were rich cast in much. 12:42 And there came a certain poor widow, and she threw in two mites, which make a farthing. 12:43 And he called unto him his disciples, and saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, That this poor widow hath cast more in, than all they which have cast into the treasury: 12:44 For all they did cast in of their abundance; but she of her want did cast in all that she had, even all her living.

4:18 And these are they which are sown among thorns; such as hear the word, 4:19 And the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things entering in, choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful.

From the Gospel according to Luke

1.53 He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away.

6.[20] And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said, Blessed be ye poor: for yours is the kingdom of God.
[21] Blessed are ye that hunger now: for ye shall be filled. Blessed are ye that weep now: for ye shall laugh.
[22] Blessed are ye, when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you from their company, and shall reproach you, and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of man's sake.
[23] Rejoice ye in that day, and leap for joy: for, behold, your reward is great in heaven: for in the like manner did their fathers unto the prophets.
[24] But woe unto you that are rich! for ye have received your consolation.
[25] Woe unto you that are full! for ye shall hunger. Woe unto you that laugh now! for ye shall mourn and weep.
[26] Woe unto you, when all men shall speak well of you! for so did their fathers to the false prophets.

12. [15] And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.
[16] And he spake a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully:
[17] And he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits?
[18] And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods.
[19] And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry.
[20] But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided?

16. [19] There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day:
[20] And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores,
[21] And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man's table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores.
[22] And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried;
[23] And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.
[24] And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.
[25] But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented.
[26] And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence.
[27] Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father's house:
[28] For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment.
[29] Abraham saith unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.
[30] And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent.
[31] And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.

Nasty practitioner of the politics of envy, eh, that Jesus?

If the salvation of a rich man is nothing short of a miracle, then we have no reason to envy the rich at all. In fact, we should pity them. This is the exact opposite of the politics of envy.

Furthermore, "the love of money" is not the same thing as wealthy people. It is greed - equally present in those who clamor for wealth as in those who attain it - which causes evils, not the relative success on the part of some in the exercise thereof.

Yes, wanting a decent job for yourself and your children, and being able to feed, educate, and medically treat them, is 'greed'...

There may be people who became rich without loving money.

Perhaps.

My point was not that none of the wealthy are guilty of greed, or that most of them aren't, or even that a significant number aren't.

My point was that the abundant presence of a particular sin within a certain socioeconomic class does not exonerate the rest of society from ever having committed this same sin, and therefore does not justify the identification of that class as the very incarnation of that sin.

Jesus speaks of "the rich". Repeatedly, continuously, with little alteration. And I would remind you that Holy Tradition is against wealth too: from the Egyptian desert fathers to St.Francis of Assisi and beyond, holiness always goes with giving up any wealth you may have. Holy Poverty is a very real presence in Catholic and Orthodox tradition. And while you may be a political leader and a saint (the Emperors St.Charlemagne and St.Henry, for instance, King Louis IX, and so on) and even a war leader and a saint (not only St.Joan; the fact that he led 15000 Austrians against 80000 Turks at Szekesfehervar did not prevent St.Lawrence of Brindisi from being canonized and made a Doctor of the Church, for instance); but nobody has ever been canonized for becoming rich, never mind how honourably and constructively they did so.

I am not saying wealth is a virtue. Jesus speaks often of the rich, but not exclusively - the merciless servant, deeply in debt as he is, is hardly rich, but is no model of saintliness for that. Poverty, or at least spiritual poverty, is necessary for holiness, but it is not sufficient. Being poor does not automatically make you a saint.

And to bring us back to the original point: If Jesus repeatedly links wealth to sin, and Holy Tradition consistently reminds us that we must have no love for material things, then we have absolutely no reason to envy the rich. If we desire heaven, why covet that which risks the loss of it?
